Construction and structure of a fly leader
The structure of a fly leader is always similar these days. These are usually leaders that taper from the fly line to the bait (fly or streamer). i.e. at the transition from the fly line to the leader, the fly leader is often significantly thicker than at the tip where the fly is knotted. This is called a “tapered leader.” The longer this thick part of the leader (the so-called “butt section”), the better the leader unrolls and stretches better.
The reason for this taper is better physical force transmission when throwing. Ultimately it's about being able to present a fly well. Manufacturers vary in the structure of the taper. Modern manufacturing technologies mean that tapered leaders can be made from nylon or fluorocarbon. In the past, this taper was forced to be achieved using braided leaders. These leaders are still fully justified today.

Standard lengths:
As mentioned above, most fly fishing leaders are made from nylon. The best-selling length when fly fishing for trout and grayling are leaders with a length of 9 feet or 275 cm. This corresponds exactly to the best rod length for a classic trout line class #4-6. If the water is particularly clear or the fish are particularly shy, the length can also be increased significantly. Certain techniques also involve fishing with leaders of 450 cm. For smaller bodies of water and shorter rods, a 7.5 foot (210 cm) leader can be used.
Tip: Make sure that the leaders have a “Perfection Loop” attached to the end of the fly line. This allows you to quickly and easily connect the leader to the fly line using a loop connection
Strength and Diameters of fly leaders
We recommend that you pay attention to the tensile strength of the different manufacturers, as there are enormous differences. The most commonly used leader thickness, i.e. the tip diameter at the front end of the leader, is 0.16 mm (5X) when fly fishing for trout and grayling with a dry fly or nymph. For larger fish and dusty water you can also fish with 0.18mm. 0.21mm to 0.25mm is more suitable for streamer fishing.
Tip: Please pay attention to the age of the nylon fly leaders, as nylon significantly loses its carrying capacity as it ages. Solar radiation and heat affect the material and weaken it.
In this respect, you should use new nylon leaders at the start of the season so as not to risk losing fish during the fight.

Nylon vs Fluorocarbon
In addition to the classic, conical nylon leaders, there are also fly leaders made of fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon has a similar light refractive index to water and is noticed significantly less by the fish. In this respect, some anglers swear by fluorocarbon leaders. Basically, fluorocarbon sinks easily into the surface and has a slightly lower carrying capacity than a nylon leader with the same tip diameter. However, fluorocarbon leaders are significantly more expensive than conventional nylon leaders.
TIP: Please do not tie a nylon leader directly to a knot with fluorocarbon, as the fluorocarbon material is significantly harder and can damage the nylon material. A leader ring can quickly help here. This allows you, for example, to combine a nylon leader with a fluorocarbon tip (after the tippet ring).
Especially in crystal-clear waters such as the Bavarian Traun at low water or the Förchensee, a fluorocarbon leader can be the decisive advantage for catching a fish.

Trout Special Leader (with Loop)
A continual meditation on improvement possibilities for tried and tested products is one of our basic skills. Even when fishing we see it as our duty to spend some of that time cosidering the question - What can we improve on? This is how the Trout Special and the Grayling Special leaders came to be.
The Trout Special Leader with its 290 cm avoids scaring spooky fish by keeping the shadow of the fly line as far as possible from the quarry. Grayling Special Leader (with Loop)
You will have noticed that longer finer leaders and light tippets are necessary when dry fly fishing for wary species, such as Grayling, on clear days. This induced us to develope the Grayling Special Leader.By precisely balancing the seperate sections of the Grayling Special we have produced a very accurate leader with excellent turn over qualities. It doesn‘t matter if you fish with small dry flies or the smallest midges, with the Grayling Special you will notice the difference. The shock absorbing section in the butt part of the leader is a cushion against breaking very fine tippets. You can of course use this leader for wary Trout as well. Emergers and weighted nymphs that do not have to be fished too deeply also pose no problem for the Grayling Special.

Specialty leaders: Poly-Leader and Predator
In addition to the classic leaders made of nylon and fluorocarbon, there are full-function leaders. There are also so-called “special leaders”. These are intended for special areas of application.
Poly Leader
One of the most important special leaders is the Poly-Leader or also called VersiLeader. This is a nylon leader with a coating that can have different sinking speeds. There is a small loop at the end of the fly line. There is either a loop or a nylon end at the front end.
Poly leaders are perfect for use with streamers as they can be quickly and easily looped into the floating fly line.
This means you can quickly turn your trout line into a sink-tip line.
Poly leaders are offered with different sink rates and load capacities.
Tip: It is best to attach a leader ring with a load capacity of 8 kg, for example (for trout fishing). This allows you to avoid the nylon part of the polyleader from being further shortened. Attach the desired leader thickness, e.g. 0.23 mm for a trout streamer, to the leader ring using a clinch knot.
Pike leaders
When fly fishing for pike, bite protection against the sharp teeth of a pike is essential. A pike leader usually consists of a thick “butt section” in order to be able to easily transport large, bushy pike streamers. A braided steel wire or titanium wire is usually used as bite protection. The leaders vary depending on whether a carabiner, MicroSnap or Twist Snap is attached to the front end of the streamer.
Of course, the streamers can also be tied directly to the steel silk.
Please make sure you have good bite protection when fly fishing for pike and other predatory fish!

Tippet Rings (Pitzenbauer Ringerl)

These small, extremely strong rings were made public by the famous fly fisherman Edgar Pitzenbauer and used in the grayling fishing. Meanwhile, these rings have spread all over the world among fly fishermen.
They are tied to the end of your leader (conical, braided or linear) and allow you again and again to re-tie your leader at the end, without shortening the length of the leader. The individual rings are rounded inside and out and are therefore very smooth. These rings have no solder joint. Thus, a "break point" was prevented and the surface remains very smooth. The rings are extremely light and durable. Also suitable for floating leaders.
Especially modern Nymph fishermen use these rings in an enormously wide range of applications. By using it, you will ultimately save money, as your leaders will only have to shorten their fly changes in the front leader material. In addition, the field of application is very diverse. You can use these rings to tie in Springer flies or pike felts, or even use them when drop shot fishing.
Recommendation: we strongly advise you to use the rings when using Fluorocarbon leaders / leader material in combination with regular nylon, as this material is apt to cut through the surface hardness of other types of nylon. With a leader ring that does not happen anymore.
Even with the use of polyleaders / Versileaders the use of the leader rings is recommended because it no longer shortens the polyleader and the life can be increased enormously.
