Die Zahl der bis heute bekannten Zweiflügler wird weltweit mit ca. 80.000 Arten angegeben. Allein die für uns interessanten Arten, deren Larvenentwicklung im Wasser stattfindet, geht in die Tausende. Von all diesen sind die Zuckmücken (Chironomidae) und die Kriebelmücken (Simuliidae) die mit Abstand wichtigsten Familien. Während aber die Kriebelmückenlarven auf Fließwasser mit schneller Strömung angewiesen sind, leben die Zuckmückenlarven in allen nur denkbaren Gewässern. Sie leben in Bächen, Flüssen, Teichen und Seen und kommen noch in den extremsten Lebensräumen vor. Sie sind in Sturzbächen, nur zeitweise wassergefüllten Lachen, verschmutzten Tümpeln, übersäuerten, wie stark alkalischen Gewässern zu finden. Ihr Wert als Fischnahrung wird allgemein unterschätzt. Er macht in vielen Wassern, vom Frühjahr bis in den Herbst, einen bedeutenden Anteil, wenn nicht die Hauptnahrung der Geschuppten aus. Trotz ihrer vielen Arten bieten die Zuck- und Kriebelmücken ein ziemlich einheitliches Bild. Sie sind mittelgroß bis sehr klein und vorwiegend düster gefärbt. Man kann sie mit sehr wenigen Fliegentypen imitatorisch abdecken. Die CDC-Diptera ist solch ein Gruppenmuster: Dunkler, konisch verjüngt bis in den Hakenbogenansatz reichender Körper, zarte Organzafibern in V-Form als Flügel und herkömmlicher CDC-Hechelfiberkranz ergeben eine Top- Midge. Gefischt wird die CDC-Diptera an feinem, ihrer geringen Größe entsprechenden Vorfach trocken oder im Film. Beim Zuckmückenschlupf kann sie, dicht unter der Oberfläche angeboten, manchmal unschlagbar sein.

The "CDC Emerger" imitates the early emerging phase of a mayfly, the beginning of the hatching process. This process develops in the water film as soon as the ascender has broken the surface tension and ends with the emergence from the nymph skin onto the water surface. It begins with the bursting of the nymph skin on the back of the ascender. Then the front body (thorax) with the still crumpled wings and feet of the dun pushes out of the chitinous shell. In this phase, the emerger appears as a voluminous balloon from a fish's perspective. This stage, in which the emergers drift completely helplessly, signals safe prey to the fish.The pattern tied with an overemphasized thorax using the 'loop wing technique' effectively replicates this relatively short phase. In accordance with the natural models, this phase imitation is fished calmly in the current. The air trapped between the CDC (Cul de Canard) fibers gives the CDC emerger excellent buoyancy. Therefore, it can be fished without problems even in rough water. In calm currents, it is recommended to present the pattern deep in the film. It can also be easily pulled underwater and fished as an ascender just breaking the surface tension. The trapped air keeps the CDC emerger securely at the water's surface.
